What Are Zodiac Symbols?
Zodiac symbols are Unicode characters, one per sign, encoded in the Miscellaneous Symbols block as a run from ♈ Aries (U+2648) to ♓ Pisces (U+2653). They are not a font and not stickers: each is a single text character with an official name, so ♌ is "Leo" in the standard and ♏ is "Scorpio". The thirteenth glyph ⛎ Ophiuchus (U+26CE) was added later for the Japanese phone emoji sets and is usually treated as a curiosity rather than a real sign.
The planet glyphs are older than the zodiac ones in origin, going back to medieval astronomy, and they sit in the same block: ☉ for the Sun, ☽ for the Moon, ☿ Mercury, ♀ Venus, ♂ Mars, ♃ Jupiter, ♄ Saturn, ♅ Uranus, ♆ Neptune and ♇ Pluto. Astrologers also use an alternative Uranus ⛢ and the Pluto variant ⯓, plus the asteroids ⚳ Ceres, ⚴ Pallas, ⚵ Juno, ⚶ Vesta, the centaur ⚷ Chiron and ⚸ Black Moon Lilith, and the lunar nodes ☊ ☋. Aspects borrow a mix of dedicated glyphs (☌ conjunction, ☍ opposition, ⚹ sextile) and plain geometry (△ trine, □ square). The four element triangles 🜂 🜄 🜁 🜃 come from the Alchemical Symbols block and need a specialist font.
A screen reader announces these by their Unicode names, which is a mixed blessing. ♈ is spoken as "Aries", which is ideal, but ☽ is "first quarter moon" and ☉ is "sun", so a big-three line such as ☉ ♌ ☽ ♓ ↑ ♏ is heard as "sun Leo first quarter moon Pisces upwards arrow Scorpio". Adding the words, as in the "Zodiac Signs with Names" section, makes a bio far clearer for listeners.
Why Use Zodiac Symbols?
Putting your sign in a bio is shorthand for a whole personality description, and the glyph does it in one character where the word takes up to eleven. That matters on TikTok, where the bio is capped at 80 characters, and on Twitter and X, where 160 have to cover everything. ♐ costs one character; "Sagittarius" costs eleven.
The full "big three" layout has become a standard format in astrology communities: Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign in that order, written ☉ ♊ ☽ ♑ ↑ ♒ or with dots between them. Readers who follow astrology can decode it instantly, and the arrow ↑ for the ascendant is understood well enough that "AC" or "rising" is rarely spelled out. Add ♀ in ♎ for a Venus placement and you have a chart summary in fewer than twenty characters.
The planets and aspects do a second job for people who post transit updates. ☿ ℞ is the accepted way to write "Mercury retrograde", ♄ ☌ ♇ says "Saturn conjunct Pluto" to anyone who reads charts, and ♂ □ ♄ describes a Mars-Saturn square without a sentence. These are also the symbols astrology software prints on a natal chart wheel, so a follower who has looked at their own chart already recognises them.
Outside astrology, the sign glyphs work as minimalist tattoo references and as monogram-style decorations. A tattoo fonts name with the birth sign beside it is a common design brief, and the thin line forms of ♎ and ♒ suit that look better than the emoji squares. Where Can You Use Zodiac Symbols?
Where zodiac glyphs go, and how each platform draws them:
- Instagram: the 150-character bio is the classic home for a big-three line. Instagram shows the signs as the phone's emoji, so iPhone viewers see purple tiles and Android viewers see their maker's version.
- TikTok: with only 80 characters available, a bare ♌ after your name is the usual approach. The sign also fits in the display name field.
- Twitter and X: the bio and the display name both accept every glyph on this page, and the planet symbols ☿ ♀ ♂ stay as plain text.
- Tumblr and Pinterest: descriptions and board titles take the signs and the aspects; the element triangles 🜂 🜄 are risky here because the reader's browser font decides.
- Discord: roles named ♈ Aries, ♉ Taurus and so on are a popular server feature, and the glyph renders as emoji in the role list on mobile.
- Dating profiles: most apps have a dedicated zodiac field, so the symbol in your free-text bio is optional rather than necessary.
The twelve signs default to emoji presentation, which is why they appear as coloured squares almost everywhere. Attaching the text selector U+FE0E asks for the flat line-art glyph instead, but support is uneven: some Android apps honour it and show a plain ♓, while iOS often keeps the purple tile. The planets behave the other way round, staying as text unless an app decides otherwise, with ♀ and ♂ being the two most likely to flip into emoji.
How to Copy and Paste Zodiac Symbols
- Find your sign in the first section, or scroll to "Zodiac Signs with Names" if you want the word included for clarity.
- Tap ☉, then your Sun sign, then ☽ and your Moon sign, then ↑ and your rising sign. Each tap copies that glyph and appends it to the bar above, building the chart line in order.
- Hit Copy in the bar, open your profile editor and paste the line under your name. Preview it on both an iPhone and an Android device if you can, because the sign tiles differ.
Tips for Using Zodiac Symbols
Order of the big three
Convention is Sun, Moon, rising. If you write them in another order, or use ☾ (last quarter moon) instead of ☽, readers may still understand, but the ☽ form is what chart software prints, so it is the one people expect. Use · or ⋆ between the pairs to stop the line looking like a random string.
Emoji squares or line glyphs
On iPhone the signs are purple squares with a white glyph; Samsung and Google draw them in their own colours. If you want the thin outlined look you see on printed charts, there is no reliable way to force it on someone else's phone. Design the bio so it looks fine either way: keep the sign at the end of a line and avoid framing it with characters that assume a narrow width.
Planets need context
A lone ♀ is read by most people as the female sign and ♂ as the male sign, not as Venus and Mars. When you use them astrologically, pair them with a sign (♀ in ♎) or an aspect (♀ △ ♃) so the meaning is obvious.
The rarer glyphs
⚷ Chiron, ⚸ Lilith and the asteroids render on iOS, macOS and Windows but are missing from many Android fonts, and the alchemical elements 🜂 🜄 🜁 🜃 are missing from most. Keep those to platforms where you have checked the result, or write the word.
Typing them on a computer
In Word, type 2648 and press Alt + X for ♈; the other signs follow in order up to 2653 for ♓. On a Mac, the Character Viewer (Control + Command + Space) lists them under the "Zodiac" search term, and the planets under "Astrology".
