What Are Glitch Fonts?
Glitch text, often called zalgo text, is ordinary text with dozens of combining marks attached to each letter. Combining marks are Unicode characters that have no position of their own: an acute accent (U+0301), a tilde below (U+0330), a double breve above and so on. The standard allows any number of them after a single base letter, and text renderers stack them outward, one on top of the next. Add three or four and you get a lightly flickering letter; add twenty and the marks spill far above and below the line, which is the "corrupted" look this page produces.
Most of the marks come from the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300 to U+036F), with a few from the supplement and the marks-for-symbols ranges. The generator picks them with a fixed random seed, so the same input always produces the same H̸̛́e̷̓l̸̈l̵̔o̴̎ rather than a fresh scramble on every reload. The three strengths, Glitch Light, Glitch and Cursed Glitch, differ only in how many marks each letter receives.
Because these are characters, not a font, they paste into any Unicode text field. Two warnings are due. First, a screen reader will either announce every mark ("combining diaeresis, combining low line…") or give up on the word, so glitch text is genuinely unreadable to assistive technology. Second, the base letters underneath are still real text, so a moderator or a search engine sees "hello" even when a human sees a mess.
Why Use Glitch Fonts?
Glitch text carries a specific mood that no other style manages: something has gone wrong with the machine. That makes it the default choice for horror ARGs, creepypasta captions, analogue-horror channels, "the void" aesthetic and any username that wants to look haunted. Stacked with the ⛧ or ☠ frames from the Creepy Glitch section it becomes a full costume for a spooky-season profile.
It also works as an attention device in a feed. A single glitched word inside a plain caption breaks the visual rhythm hard enough that people pause, which is why creators glitch one keyword in a title rather than the whole sentence. The Glitch Light strength is enough for that; the heavier settings are for when illegibility is the point.
There is a technical reason the effect is unique, too. Bold, italic and fraktur alphabets replace letters with different characters, but combining marks sit on top of whatever alphabet is underneath. Where Can You Use Glitch Fonts?
Glitch text works wherever raw Unicode is displayed, but each platform handles the overflow differently:
- Discord: messages and nicknames accept it, but the nickname limit is 32 characters and every mark counts, so a heavily glitched name fits only four or five letters. Many servers run bots that strip zalgo from names, so expect a plain rename in moderated communities.
- TikTok: captions and comments show it, though the app clips the marks at the line height, so tall stacks look cut off.
- Instagram: bio and name fields tend to compress or drop the stacked marks, and the 30-character name limit counts each one, so use Glitch Light here.
- Twitter/X: the 280-character counter counts every combining mark, so a single Cursed Glitch word can consume a hundred characters.
- Reddit: works in post titles and comments, although some subreddits ban it under "no zalgo" rules because it overlaps neighbouring lines.
- YouTube: comment and channel-name filters often strip the marks entirely.
- Games: Roblox, Fortnite and most mobile games reject or normalise combining characters in usernames.
Where the text is trimmed rather than rejected, the letters survive and only the effect is lost, so nothing breaks; it just looks plain again.
How to Use the Glitch Font Generator

Tips for Using Glitch Fonts
Light is usually enough
Glitch Light keeps the word readable and survives most character counters, which is what you want in a name. Save Cursed Glitch for a headline or an image caption where nobody needs to read the underlying word.
Count the marks, not the letters
A glitched "hi" can be 40 characters long. Before pasting into a name field with a hard limit, shorten the source word rather than trying to trim marks by hand.
Expect clipping
Apps cap the line height, so marks that extend far above or below get cut flat. Marks that go below the baseline usually survive better than ones stacked high, which is why the medium strength often looks cleaner than the heavy one on mobile.
Glitch is not a filter bypass
Because the base letters remain intact, word filters and search still read the plain text underneath. Glitching an offensive word does not hide it from moderation, and glitching your name does not stop people finding the plain spelling.
Mind readers with low vision
Even sighted people with dyslexia or low vision find stacked marks painful, and screen readers cannot parse them at all.
