What Are Animal Emoticons?
Animal emoticons are text faces with ears, snouts and whiskers: bears, cats, dogs, bunnies, fish and birds put together from ordinary Unicode characters. They are not a font and not an image, so one can go into a username field, a caption or a chat and it shows in whatever colour and size the surrounding text uses.
The bear ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ is the clearest example of how these faces are built. Its ears are ʕ and ʔ, two letters from the International Phonetic Alphabet that linguists use for sounds made in the throat, and its nose is ᴥ, a phonetic letter called ain from the same family of blocks. Because the phonetic letters are included in nearly every system font, the bear renders correctly on almost anything, which is one reason it became the most popular animal face online. The cat (=^･ω･^=) uses carets for ears, the Greek letter ω for a small mouth and equals signs for whiskers. Dogs such as ▼・ᴥ・▼ get floppy ears from the black triangle in the geometric shapes block, while U´ᴥ`U lets its ears hang with a plain capital U. Bunnies rely on a lowercase x for a twitching nose, as in (・x・), and the paws in ฅ(^◕ᴥ◕^)ฅ are a Thai letter that happens to look like a raised paw. The fish ><(((º> is older than all of them; it comes from email signatures and uses nothing that is not on a basic keyboard.
A screen reader cannot see any of this. It reads the bear as "latin letter pharyngeal voiced fricative, bullet, latin letter ain" or skips the pieces it has no name for, so a listener never hears "bear". Name the animal in words when it matters and use the face for fun.
Why Use Animal Emoticons?
An animal face is a reaction with a character attached. Where a smiley says "happy", the cat (=^ ◡ ^=) says "happy, and a bit smug about it", and the waving bear ʕノ•ᴥ•ʔノ is a greeting with a personality that a wave emoji lacks. That extra layer is why pet owners, gamers and anyone with an animal-themed username reach for them.
They also work as identity markers. Discord servers built around a mascot put the bear or the cat into channel names and roles, streamers keep a fish or a bunny next to their display name, and friends adopt one animal each so a chat can tell at a glance who is talking. The variations matter here: ʕ •̀ ω •́ ʔ is a determined bear, ʕಠᴥಠʔ is unimpressed, and ʕ ᵔᴥᵔ ʔ is blissfully happy, so the same animal can react to a whole conversation.
Finally, they hold up better than most emoji. An emoji bear is drawn differently by Apple, Google and Samsung, while ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ is the same characters on every device with a font for them. Where Can You Use Animal Emoticons?
Animal faces are short, so they fit in places that reject longer art:
- Discord: the bear is a server favourite in channel names such as ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ-general and in nicknames, which allow 32 characters. The crab (\/)(°,,,°)(\/) uses backslashes that Discord can swallow as escapes, so put that one in backticks.
- Instagram: bios and captions keep all of these, and the name field takes a short one such as (・x・) beside a real name.
- TikTok: comments are full of the cat with paws ฅ(＾・ω・＾ฅ); the bio is short, so pick a single animal.
- WhatsApp: faces paste normally, and a group chat named after a pet can carry (=^･ω･^=) in its title.
- Twitch: chat is one line and moves fast, so compact faces like ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ and (・Θ・) work better than the long spider.
- Steam and gaming profiles: bears and fish are common in display names; game clients that only allow plain letters will reject them.
If the bear's ears show as boxes, the viewer is on an old or heavily stripped-down system, which is rare. The Thai paws ฅ and the Telugu eyes in the spider are the parts most likely to be missing on cheap devices.
How to Copy and Paste Animal Emoticons
- Find your animal: bears for a warm hello, cats for sass, dogs for loyalty, bunnies for shyness, or a fish when you want something a little odd.

Learn the parts and remix
Swap the bear's eyes and you have a new mood: ʕ◉ᴥ◉ʔ is startled, ʕ≧ᴥ≦ʔ is laughing, ʕ ● ᴥ ●ʔ is wide-eyed. The ears and nose stay, so it is still obviously a bear.
Fish need direction
><(((º> swims right and <゜)))彡 swims left. In a row of fish, point them the same way, or put one at each end of a message facing inward.
Watch the full-width letters
Some dogs, like ＵＴｪＴＵ, use full-width Latin letters that are twice as wide as normal ones. They look fine on their own but eat a username field quickly.
Keep the spider for chats
/╲/\╭(ఠఠ益ఠఠ)╮/\╱\ is long, uses backslashes and includes Telugu letters, so it is fine in a message and a poor choice for a bio or a display name.
Pair with a name style
A bear beside lettering from the cute fonts page, or a tiny cat next to a small-caps name from the small fonts generator, makes a tidy gaming handle.
