Snowflake Symbol Variants and Lookalikes

Using the Snowflake Symbol

The snowflake symbol is a six-armed crystal from the Zapf Dingbats set, which Unicode absorbed into its Dingbats block in 1993 as U+2744. Two siblings arrived with it: the tight trifoliate ❅ and the heavy chevron ❆, which no keyboard offers but which give a winter design three matching weights. When emoji came along, only the first of the three received a coloured presentation, so ❄️ shows as a pale blue flake while ❅ and ❆ always stay in the text colour.

Text flake or blue emoji

Typed on its own, ❄ inherits the colour of the words around it, black on a light page and white on a dark one. Adding the variation selector U+FE0F produces ❄️ and the platform's blue artwork. Both are the same character for search and sorting purposes. Many phone keyboards insert the emoji form by default; if you want the plain crystal to stay plain, paste the version with the text-style selector U+FE0E from the variants list, which most apps respect.

Seasonal bio decorations

The snowflake is one of the most-used seasonal characters on Instagram, TikTok and Discord. From late November onward it frames display names, "❄ Mia ❄", opens winter sale captions and sits in status messages next to ☃ and 🎄. The three Unicode weights let you build a divider with rhythm, ❆ ❄ ❅ ❄ ❆, that reads as designed rather than repeated, and the asterisk dingbats ✻ ✼ ❉ fill the gaps in text-only snow art. When the season ends, the sun symbol ☀ is the usual replacement in the same slot, which is why the two pages on this site mirror each other.

Other meanings

Beyond weather, ❄ marks freezer-safe packaging, the frost or air-conditioning setting on appliances and thermostats, cold-storage instructions on medicine, and the "frozen" state in software such as a paused account or a locked spreadsheet pane. In some online slang it is also a nickname for cocaine, so context matters in captions that could be misread. The warning symbol ⚠ combined with ❄ is the standard way to flag icy conditions in road and travel notices.

Rendering and typing

The text glyph is part of every mainstream system font and shows correctly on old phones, e-readers and forum software that strip emoji; the blue version needs an emoji font, which every modern device has. There is no Windows Alt code because the Dingbats block lies outside the old code pages; type 2744 and press Alt + X in Word, or use the Win + . panel. LaTeX users get the same glyph from the pifont package with \ding{100}, and ❅ and ❆ with \ding{101} and \ding{102}. Paired with a thin alphabet from the aesthetic fonts generator, the plain flake gives a frosty look that survives on any screen.

Snowflake Symbol FAQ

How do I type a snowflake symbol?

On Windows press Win + . and search "snowflake", or type 2744 then Alt + X in Word. On a Mac use Control + Command + Space. On phones the emoji keyboard has it; copy the plain ❄ from this page if you want the non-emoji look.

Why is my snowflake white instead of blue?

You have the text form without the variation selector, so it takes the text colour. Add U+FE0F after it, or copy ❄️ from the variants list, and the device will draw the blue emoji.

What is the difference between ❄, ❅ and ❆?

They are three separate Dingbats characters with different arm designs: a classic crystal, a tight leaf-shaped flake and a heavy chevron flake. Only the first has an emoji version, so the other two always render in the text colour.

Is there an Alt code for the snowflake?

No. Alt codes cover only the old Windows code pages, which stop far short of the Dingbats block. Use the emoji panel, the Alt + X method in Word, or copy the character from this page.

Does the snowflake symbol mean anything besides snow?

It marks freezer-safe goods, the cold setting on appliances, cold-chain medicine and "frozen" states in software. In some slang it refers to cocaine, and in political slang it is an insult, so read the context before using it in captions.

Can I use ❄ in a username?

Most handles are limited to letters, numbers and underscores, so it will be rejected there. Display names and bios on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and Twitch accept it without trouble.
